The Sgian Dubh (from Gaelic Sgian Dubh - black knife) is an item of national Scottish men's clothing, a small knife with a straight blade. The knife was probably called "black" either for the color of the handle or for its concealed carrying. Like many other knives, its origin is linked to military use. The Sgian Dubh was a concealed weapon for use in hand-to-hand combat. It was used when the main weapon was lost, inaccessible, or impractical for the task at hand.
There are several versions of the origin of the sgian dubh. According to one, it traces its history back to the sgian achlais (Gaelic Sgian achlais - armpit knife), which was worn secretly, usually in the left sleeve, under the armpit. Scots used the sgian achlais, probably as early as the early 17th century. The functions of the sgian achlais are primarily utilitarian, but like any knife, in a pinch it could also be used as a weapon.
