A Sikach (Slicer in Ukrainian) is a traditional Ukrainian knife that Cossacks usually made of broken sabers and used in camping kitchens. We were able to recreate this knife by using drawings and descriptions of the life of the Zaporozhian Sich Cossacks. Developing this knife in cooperation with chefs of Kharkiv restaurants, we aimed not only to recreate the Sikach, but also to adapt it to the needs of modern Ukrainian cuisine.

The Sikach knife can be used for almost every cutting task in the kitchen. It should feel like an extension of your arm. It’s a go-to for chopping and dicing vegetables, fruit, and herbs as well as cutting a variety of other ingredients like meat, poultry, and fish. The sharp curved point on Sikach also makes it adept at very delicate cuts. The wide blade makes it easy to scoop up sliced ingredients. The shape of the Sikach ensures a very efficient cut – thanks to the extended blade, the chef uses less effort while cutting.
